President Richard Nixon ,republican, was elected president in 1969. The country was still divided about Vietnam and Nixon was scared he would not get reelected because he did not end the war in Vietnam. Nixon was overcome by his fear of not being reelected and wanted to steal the DNC's campaign strategy information and strategies to ensure reelection. After the break-in the Washington Post was writing articles about the break in and found out Nixon had ties to the people in the Burglary. Nixon began to cover up any ties and pay peopl to be quiet about it. In November 1972 Nixon ended up winning the election. The president had tapes that he recorded of all his conversations during predentcy and the courts wanted them but he dienied until July 24, 1974 when he had to surrender the tapes. On July 27 the House Judiciary Committee determined they would empeach the president charging him with obstruction of Justice, abuse of power, and contemptof Congress for refusing to obey a congressional sebpoena to release the tapes. Before the House could write the articles of empeachment Nixon resigned.
